Directions to Bivalve, NJ: A. J. Meerwald’s Homeport

 

From Philadelphia or North

Cross the Walt Whitman Bridge and take Rt. 42 South – also called N/S freeway – toward Atlantic City, (or Ben Franklin to Rt. 676 to 42 South, or Rt. 295 to 42 South). From 42 South exit onto Rt. 55 South and follow it all the way to its end. This will put you on Rt. 47 South. Continue to the second traffic light (WaWa and Campbell’s Texaco on the corners) and turn right. (Just before the light you will pass a fork in the road, Keep right!). You are now on the Mauricetown Causeway and will cross the Maurice River and continue for about 2 miles to a ‘T’ intersection; turn left. Continue for another 2 miles or so to another ‘T’ intersection and turn right. You are now headed west on Main St., Port Norris (Rt. 553). Pass Newcomb’s grocery on your right and make a left onto High Street. Proceed as described below to BDP or Rutgers.

 

From Cape May or South

Travel Rt. 47 North – Delsea Drive – to traffic light in Bricksboro (8 miles South of Millville). Look for WaWa and Campbell’s Texaco on corners and turn left. You are now on the Mauricetown Causeway and will cross the Maurice River and continue for about 2 miles to a ‘T’ intersection; turn left. Continue for another 2 miles or so to another ‘T’ intersection and turn right. You are now headed west on Main St., Port Norris (Rt. 553). Pass Newcomb’s grocery on your right and make a left onto High Street. Proceed as described below to BDP or Rutgers.

 

From Atlantic City and East

Take Rt. 322/40 West towards Mays Landing. At Mays Landing turn left at traffic light onto Rt. 50 South (Mobile station on corner). Follow Rt. 50 South to Tuckahoe. Turn right at yellow blinking light on to Rt. 49 West. Take left fork onto Rt. 548 East, following signs for Port Elizabeth. At ‘T’ intersection, turn left onto Rt. 47 South. Continue to the first traffic light (WaWa and Campbell’s Texaco on corners) and turn right. (Just before the light you will pass a fork in the road, Keep right!) You are now on the Mauricetown Causeway and will cross the Maurice River and continue for about 2 miles to a ‘T’ intersection; turn left. From Salem, Bridgeton or West

Take Rt. 49 East to Pearl St. in downtown Bridgeton. Turn right at Bus station/Tourist Center. Follow road to Fairton where you need to take a sharp right at the C-Mart. You are now on Rt. 553. Follow Rt. 553 through Cedarville, Newport, and Dividing Creek. When you come to Port Norris, turn right onto High Street. Proceed as described below to BDP or Laboratory.

 

Bayshore Center at Bivalve & Schooner AJ MEERWALD

Proceed down High Street. You will pass Bateman’s on the right; to your left is a flagpole and just past that is a white house with a large Bayshore Discovery Project sign on the front of the building. Pull into clamshell “driveway” just past the building and follow signs for “Schooner Parking.”

 

Haskin Shellfish Research Lab & Library Proceed through marsh and make first left onto Miller Ave. The Haskin Lab will be on your right.

 

Directions to Burlington, NJ—Riverfront Promenade  

From I-295 take exit 47-B to Route 541 or take NJ Turnpike to Exit 5 and turn left on to Route 541 to Burlington. Continue on Route 541 approximately 3 to 4 miles. The name of the street changes to High Street. Continue past Route 130 North and South straight to end of High Street at the Delaware River. Turn right onto East Pearl Street for parking areas.

For Directions to Camden and Wiggins Park Marina 

 

North on Interstate 676 take Exit 5A labeled Mickle Blvd/Camden Waterfront. Turn right at traffic light onto Mickle Blvd. Follow straight to the end. Wiggins Park Marina is down the hill on the left. 

From the Ben Franklin Bridge turn right immediately after the toll plaza on to Broadway. Follow Broadway several blocks to Mickle Blvd. Turn right on to Mickle and follow it to the end. Wiggins Park Marina is down the hill on the left. 

Note: the parking garage is open from 6 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If your parking needs extend beyond 6:00 p.m., it is necessary to park in lot #3 located between Federal and Mickle Blvd and between Third Street and Delaware Avenue adjacent to the YMCA.

Directions to Greenwich Boat Works 

I. General Directions from Points West of Bridgeton:        Follow route 49 east to Shiloh.  In Shiloh, turn right onto route 620. Follow route 620 through Roadstown to a T intersection in Greenwich with Greate Street. Turn left on Greate Street, which is route 623. Follow Greate Street as it jogs right and then left at the elementary school and then goes into the center of Greenwich.  Pass the Post Office and the Country Store on the left, and then turn right onto Market Lane at the Tea Burning Monument. Follow Market Lane about 1/4 mile to the Greenwich Boat Works.  

 

II. General Directions from Points East of Bridgeton:     Follow route 49 west to Bridgeton. Keep going west on route 49 as it crosses the Cohansey River and goes past the Cumberland County Courthouse on the left. In a block or so, when you see a large school on the right, get into the left lane. Just past the school, make a left onto route 607. Follow 607 as it goes past a cemetery for a few hundred yards and then turns right. Continue to follow 607 into Greenwich, where it makes a T intersection with Greate Street. Turn left onto Greate Street, which is also route 623 and then right onto Market Lane at the Tea Burning Monument. Follow Market Lane about a 1/4-mile to the Greenwich Boat Works. 

 

III. General Directions from Points North of Bridgeton    Route 77 south becomes Pearl Street in Bridgeton. Follow Pearl Street south to an intersection with route 49 at the south side of Bridgeton. Turn right on route 49 west. Proceed across the Cohansey River and past the Cumberland County Courthouse on the left. Directions to Lewes, Delaware—Ferry Terminal 

 

From the south along the east coast of the Delmarva Peninsula, travel Route 13 North, to Route 113 North, then northeast to Route 24 away from Millsboro, Delaware, to Route 1 North to Route 9 East and follow signs to ferry terminal.  From Northern Delaware travel South on Route 13 to Route 1 South ($1 toll) to Route 9 East and follow signs to ferry terminal.  

From Easton, MD, take Route 331 South from Easton to route 318 East; Routes 331 and 318 will intersect, follow 318 East to Route 18 East; in Georgetown, Delaware, take Route 9 East and follow signs to ferry terminal.  

From Northern New Jersey take the Garden State Parkway South to Route 109 North to Route 9 South and follow signs to ferry terminal.   

From the Delaware Memorial Bridge thru New Jersey, take Route 49 East to intersection of routes 49 and 47.  At intersection follow Route 47 South to Route 9 South and follow signs to ferry terminal.  

From the Cape May, New Jersey ferry terminal you may either pay to drive your car aboard the ferry (although a car is not necessary unless interested in visiting the town) or you may park your vehicle and pay the reduced fare of a foot passenger.  The Schooner is berthed at the ferry terminal in Lewes.

 

DIRECTIONS TO NORTH JERSEY PORTS 

 

Jersey City, NJ — Liberty State Park – Liberty Landing Marina

Liberty Landing Marina is located in Liberty State Park, minutes from the Holland Tunnel and easily accessible via the NJ Turnpike at exits 14b and 14c. For exit 14b, travel under the Turnpike and go ¾ the way around the first traffic circle and onto Phillips Drive. Continue on, passing Liberty Science Center and proceed to the end of the road. Turn right onto Audrey Zapp Drive and continue ¼ mile to Liberty Landing Marina parking lot. For exit 14c, immediately after the toll booth and at the bottom of the ramp go right one block then turn left and proceed to the ‘T’ intersection, turning right onto Audrey Zapp Drive. Travel ¼ mile to Liberty Landing Marina on the left. 

Atlantic Highlands, NJ – Municipal Marina

Take Garden State Parkway to Exit 117, follow signs to Rt. 36 East approx. 10 miles to First Street (Sign says “Atlantic Highlands – Business & Waterfront). Take jug handle & stay on First Street to marina – ship is at end of one of the middle docks. 

Perth Amboy, NJ – Perth Amboy City Marina

From north or south

NJ Turnpike- Exit 10 to Rt. 440 North…follow signs for Perth Amboy to first Perth Amboy exit, Crows Mill Road/Smith Street (Exit comes up very quickly). Exit to right and continue towards Perth Amboy. Bear right at fork(Hess tanks to your right) and continue on Smith St. past the central business district to the river(ferry dock). Go right. Parking lot is on the waterfront. The ship is on the dock in front of the marina.

Garden State Parkway- Exit 125 (Rt. 35- South Amboy/Perth Amboy)… follow Rt. 35 North past the Amboy cinemas on your left, through the Victory Bridge to Smith Street. Make a right onto Smith Street. Continue on Smith Street past the central business district to the river(ferry dock). Go right. Parking lot is onthe waterfront. The ship is on the dock in front of the marina building.

 

Barnegat Light – Viking Village Seafood

Garden State Parkway, Exit 63 to Rt. 72 east. Go approx. 5 miles, over the bay until the road ends on Long Beach Island. Turn left toward Barnegat Light. Go about 8 miles to 1st flashing yellow light, go one more block and turn left onto 19th street. Viking Village is one block down on the left.

 

Seaside Park – Yacht Club

Take the Garden State Parkway to Exit 82. Take Rt. 37 East and drive over the bridge. Follow signs to Island Beach and continue through the “S” curve. The road becomes Central Ave. (Rt. 35 S). Go approximately 17 blocks to 3rd Ave. and take a right. Follow for 1 block to the Yacht Club on the Bay.

 

 

Directions to Independence Seaport at Penn’s Landing from Walt Whitman Bridge

 

As you cross the bridge, make sure you are in the right lane and follow signs to I-95 north.  Take the first exit marked Columbus Blvd.  Turn left at the bottom of the ramp on to Columbus.  Get in right lane.  Continue pass Moshulu, that’s the square-rigger converted to a restaurant.  At the Chart House Restaurant, turn right into their public parking lot and park at the far north end.  Schooner will be in the basin.

 

Directions to Independence Seaport at Penn’s Landing from Ben Franklin Bridge

 

Stay in left lane after crossing bridge. Take the first left on to 6th Street.  At the traffic light at first cross-street, turn left on to Race Street.  Stay on Race Street.  Travel several blocks and at fork stay to right, which continues as Race Street.  Race Street ends on Columbus Blvd.  Turn right on to Columbus.  Continue past the Hyatt Hotel on left.  Turn left into next parking lot and park. Schooner is in the basin.

 

 

Directions to Salem, NJ and the Port of Salem Pier

 

Coming from the south:

Travel Route 49 North (which is Broadway) thru Salem crossing Third Street.  Continue straight thru next intersection to the river and the Port of Salem Pier. (Do not follow Route 49, which turns right on to Front Street).

 

Coming from the north you have two options:

Travel Route 45 south into the city of Salem.  Turn right onto Broadway, which is Route 49 North.  Continue west on Broadway crossing Front Street  (don’t follow route 49 signage) until it ends at the river and the Port of Salem Pier.

 

Or

Travel Route 49 south over a lift bridge that spans the Salem River. Where Route 49 makes a hard left, turn right on to Broadway.  Continue west on Broadway until it ends at the river and the Port of Salem Pier.

 

Cape May, NJ – Utsch’s Marina

Take Garden State Parkway south to the end, continue straight, following signs to Cape May. Cross bridge and make a right turn (at U-turn sign). Follow directions for “U-Turn” to ‘T’ intersection and go left (look for Utsch’s Marina sign). Proceed under the bridge to the Marina entrance on your left. Keep to your left and look for sign for Schooner Project Parking. The MEERWALD is at the end of the dock to your right. 

Pennsville, NJ – Fort Mott State Park
From the north

Take Interstate 295 South to exit 1, Rt. 49 East.Follow Rt. 49 East through Pennsville to Fort Mott Rd: (You will continue through 3 traffic lights, one blinking yellow light, and another traffic light. Turn right at next traffic light – This is Fort Mott Rd.) Follow Fort Mott Rd. to stop sign. At stop sign turn right. Follow to park entrance.

 

From NJ Turnpike

Travel turnpike South to exit 1. Continue towards Delaware Memorial Bridge. Take Pennsville exit, Rt. 49 East (Last exit before bridge). Follow Rt. 49 East through Pennsville to Fort Mott Rd: (You will continue through 3 traffic lights, one blinking yellow light, and another traffic light. Turn right at next traffic light – This is Fort Mott Rd.) Follow Fort Mott Rd. to stop sign. At stop sign turn right. Follow to park entrance.

 

From Millville

Travel Rt. 49 West through Salem City. Cross over the river. Approximately 1 mile after river, turn left onto Lighthouse Road. Follow Lighthouse Rd. to ‘Y’ and bear left. Road becomes Fort Mott Rd.  Follow to Park entrance.

 

From Delaware

Take Delaware Memorial Bridge to first exit, Pennsville Route 49 East.Follow Rt. 49 East through Pennsville to Fort Mott Rd: (You will continue through 3 traffic lights, one blinking yellow light, and another traffic light. Turn right at next traffic light – This is Fort Mott Rd.) Follow Fort Mott Rd. to stop sign. At stop sign turn right. Follow to park entrance.

 

 

Directions to Toms River, NJ—Island Heights Yacht Club

 

From the Garden State Parkway take the Route 37 east exit. At the 6th traffic light take a right on to Westend Avenue. Continue on to River Drive (road bends to right into River Drive). The Yacht Club is ½ mile on the right.

 

Directions to Wilmington, Delaware—Marine Terminal 

 

 From the North

 Take I-95 South to I-495 South. Take exit #2 (Terminal Ave/Port of

 Wilmington) off of I-495.  At the bottom of the ramp turn left (Terminal

 Ave.).  Continue straight on Terminal Ave.  The Road will dead-end at the

 gate.  Ask the guard at the gate for directions to the MEERWALD.

 

 From the South

 Take I-95 North to I-495 North. Take exit #2 (Terminal Ave/Port of

 Wilmington) off of I-495.  At the bottom of the ramp turn right (Terminal

 Ave.).  Continue straight on Terminal Ave.  The Road will dead-end at the

 gate.  Ask the guard at the gate for directions to the MEERWALD.

 

 From Downtown Wilmington

 Proceed East on 4th Street and go over the William J. Winchester Draw

 Bridge.  At the first light make a left turn onto Christina Ave.  Continue

 on Christina to “T” intersection and turn left.  The gate will be in front of

 you.  Ask the guard at the gate for directions to the MEERWALD.

 

 From The New Jersey Turnpike

 Come across the Delaware Memorial Bridge.  Once through the toll take

 first exit to your right (9A North).  At the 5th traffic light turn right onto

 Terminal Ave.  Continue straight on Terminal Ave.  The Road will

 dead-end at the gate.  Ask the guard at the gate for directions to the

 MEERWALD.
