Local railroad history was celebrated during Heritage Day at the Bayshore Center at Bivalve on Saturday. The event included a working steam engine model train display, antique appraisals, information booths from area historical societies and three lectures that focused on the railroad, genealogy and preserving family history. Read more…

August 17, 2014 – Bayshore Center hosts Family and Railroad Heritage Day (South Jersey Times)

The Bayshore Center at Bivalve celebrated local history and genealogy this weekend with Family and Railroad Heritage Day. The event on Saturday featured a variety of educational lectures, workshops and activities geared towards helping local folks explore their personal family histories and the historic relevance of railroads on the Delaware Bayshore. Read more…

Rather than navigate through Little Egg Harbor’s complex channel system, the A.J. Meerwald schooner, which was scheduled to arrive in Beach Haven Friday, July 25, for public education programs, opted to use the easier-to-navigate Barnegat Inlet. July 21, 2014     NJ Youth Set Sail  (Youth Advocate Programs, Inc., YAP News)

“Has anyone ever been sailing before?”  The skipper aboard the A. J. Meerwald, an 85 ton schooner currently docked at the Liberty State Park in Jersey City, asked this question to a group of youth involved in Essex County’s Youth Advocate Program after they boarded the ship on Monday, July 14th. Not one hand was raised, despite the fact that many of the youth live within a few miles of the Hudson River. And without “Youth Under Way,” a social service and sailing pilot program for high risk and vulnerable youth, they may never have had the opportunity to do so.  Read more…

July 8, 2014     Sail Away: Restored Schooner Offers Trips and Camps Around NJ  (The Star-Ledger)

As the A.J. Meerwald made its way out into New York Harbor last week, crew member Seth Mathews took a moment to clarify something for its passengers.

“We’re not a pirate ship — those have square sails,” he said, gesturing toward the triangular sails above his head. “We’re a schooner.”

So yes, the A.J. Meerwald is not — and has never been — a pirate ship.  Read more…
