Getting the sails up!

The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race (GCBSR) was founded to promote public awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s maritime heritage and encourage the preservation and improvement of the Chesapeake’s natural resources. They accomplish this goal in part by donating the proceeds of the race to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, an organization working to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated to support children’s education programs of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The race begins in Baltimore, Maryland, and ends 127 nautical miles down the Chesapeake Bay in Portsmouth, Virginia.

A.J. Meerwald participates every October, and opens its “hatches” to guests. There is a limit to the number of guests and will be on a first come first served basis. There are three legs of the race which can be purchased individually or as a package. The cost for the entire trip (all three legs) $800.

Leg 1-Bivalve, NJ to Baltimore, MD
Winner of the First Annual “Epic Philadelphia to Baltimore Race”, the A.J. Meerwald will set sail early on Tuesday morning of Race Week and head to Baltimore. Feel the excitement of a race before a race. Once we are safely docked in Baltimore, you will get the chance to spend the day in town, admire the other schooners, and participate in the Parade of Sail through Inner Harbor and Fells Point. Disembark on Wednesday night. Included in the price: on board lodging for two nights, meals, Parade of Sail, Sailors’ Evening Party and a race T-shirt. Return transportation from Baltimore to Bivalve is not provided.

Leg 2-Baltimore, MD to Portsmouth, VA
Join the crew of New Jersey’s Tall Ship for the largest overnight schooner race in the U.S.! Board the boat in Baltimore on Wednesday and participate in the Parade of Sail through Inner Harbor and Fells Point, and join the other crews at the dockside Sailors’ Evening. On Thursday morning, get underway for the 127 nautical mile race down the Chesapeake Bay. The boat may finish Friday night, but the race officially concludes Saturday with an Oyster & Pig Roast and awards ceremony. Disembark on Saturday night. Included in the price: on board lodging for three nights, meals, all events and race T-shirt. Return transportation from Portsmouth to Baltimore is not provided.
