Deborah Boerner Ein has a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry/Natural Resource Management from Rutgers University. She has held editorial positions at New Jersey Outdoors, American Forests, and Lapidary Journal. Currently, she is editor of SNJ Today newspaper here in Cumberland County. Her researching of Mary Treat began at the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, which holds the Treat estate files. In addition to writing the biography of Mary Treat, Deborah tells Mary’s story in a children’s book, Mary Had a Little Zoo, written to inspire kids to observe nature and carry on the adventures of environmental study.
Mary Treat: A Biography. Working as a naturalist primarily from her Vineland home, Mary Treat was a groundbreaking scientist who discovered new flora and fauna, including three species of ants that were named in her honor, and was praised by Charles Darwin for her work.
